Remco Evenepoel discharged from hospital after successful surgery for broken collarbone

Having been caught up in the disastrous mass crash at the Itzulia Basque Country that also left Jonas Vingegaard and more in hospital, Remco Evenepoel has now been successfully operated on and discharged from hospital.

One of the first riders to go down in the crash, Evenepoel managed to bunny hop over the concrete ditch that the likes of Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and Jay Vine ended up in, although the Belgian couldn't totally avert disaster, crashing into some trees and rolling across the grass.

In the incident, Evenepoel sustained a number of injuries, most notably and most seriously, a broken collarbone, something that was immediately evident at the time as cameras showed the Belgian gingerly walking to an ambulance whilst holding his arm.

"Following his crash on Thursday’s stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country, Remco Evenepoel underwent surgery on Saturday to the broken collarbone that he sustained in the incident," writes Soudal - Quick-Step in an update to their leader's condition. "The surgery was carried out by Dr Steven Claes without complication, and the Belgian Champion – a winner of four races this season – has been discharged recuperate. Everybody at Soudal Quick-Step wishes Remco the best for his recovery."
