Marianne Vos steals Amstel Gold Race Ladies 2024 on the line after premature Lorena Wiebes celebration

Marianne Vos has powered to victory at Amstel Gold Race Ladies 2024 after a dramatic bunch sprint decided the day, benefitting from a premature celebration by Lorena Wiebes. After an early neutralisation due to an incident involving a car up ahead of the race, the race was considerably shortened, making for an attacking and aggressively paced day in the saddle for the riders.

After repeated attacks by riders, heading into the final 10km, a trio of Eva van Agt, Yara Kastelijn and Ricarda Bauernfeind held nearly a minute on the peloton. As they neared the final ascent of the Cauberg, Lotte Kopecky herself was working on the front of the peloton in a desperate attempt to close the gap.

That seemed to be working too as when the leaders reached the infamous left-hander onto the Cauberg, just 12 seconds separated the two groups. Straight from the bottom, Amanda Spratt closed the gap for Lidl-Trek, although Katarzyna Niewiadoma countered, drawing a small group clear with an attack.

With no one able to split things on the climb though, a sprint was the decider. Elisa Longo Borghini opened things up and as Lorena Wiebes powered around the Team SD Worx-Protime sprinter celebrated early, allowing Marianne Vos to snatch it at the line!
